How To Teach About Family Holiday Traditions In The Classroom

The holidays are a special time in the lives of our students. They are special both at home and in the classroom. I love learning about my students' holiday traditions, so this Holiday Traditions Project has quickly become a must-do in my December classroom. This Holiday Traditions Take-Home Project is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade students.

Holiday Traditions Projects Preschool, Kindergarten, and First Grade

I kick off the lesson by introducing my students to a tradition, what it is, and what it looks and sounds like.

We share some examples of traditions to get the students thinking.

Then I play a short video on YouTube, and I let an expert explain…and by expert, I mean a talking snowman named Olaf!

Olaf's Frozen Adventure is a short that you can find on Disney+, but there is one sone in it that my students (and myself) love, and it talks about traditions.

You can watch “That Time of Year” on YouTube. And if you're anything like me, you'll watch it over and over again for the next few weeks!

Holiday Traditions Take-Home Project

After students understand a tradition, it's time to send them home to learn about their traditions! I do this with a Holiday Traditions Project.

Students will share their favorite holiday traditions, dishes, songs, and activities with their families. They are also invited to bring a photograph to share with the class.

Family Traditions Show & Tell in the Classroom

When it's time to share, students take turns coming up to the class to “show & tell” their holiday favorites. We learn about their traditions, favorite foods, songs, and games they may play.

At the end of each student, I add their tradition to our Snow Globe Anchor chart.

This way, we can see all the different traditions our students have around the holidays.

It's one of my favorite December lesson plan activities!
