These factors make them a no-brainer in my room and I have a feeling that once you give them a try, you’ll be hooked on editable spelling worksheets too.

So What Exactly Are Editable Spelling Worksheets?

Editable spelling worksheets are spelling activities that students can do to help them learn their weekly spelling words. But. . . the pdf is editable allowing us to quickly and easily change the words. Whether you are changing the words each week for your students or differentiating your word list for some students, you can do that with editable spelling activities.

In my room, I use 2 different editable resources for our class spelling activities. My Editable Spelling Activities for Any Word List and Editable Color by Code Activities provide me with so many options for engaging and effective spelling practice. While my students love the activities, I love that in just a couple of minutes, I can create custom spelling activities that match our word list for the week. The editable features of these activities save me so much time and make planning spelling a breeze.

Between these two resources, I have over 20 different spelling activities I can use for the month. Plus. . . the Editable Spelling Activities resource also allows me to generate a custom word list page as well as spelling test pages. Everything I need for spelling practice can be created quickly and easily.

And. . . as an extra bonus, you can use more than just spelling words with these activities too! Add sight words, phonics skills, and vocabulary words too! Read more about these activities in these posts:

How To Use the Editable Features

If you’re worried about how to edit the pages, don’t be! Adding your own custom list of spelling words couldn’t be easier with these resources! Just open the resource in Adobe Reader and you are ready to go. Inside, you’ll type your spelling words just one time on the spelling list page or in the color by code key. After that, technology will do its things and automatically create your custom spelling activities for you. What could be easier than that?!?

From here, you can print them out and use them as you please! These worksheets are great for a ton of different things including centers, a weekly spelling packet, homework, fast-finisher activities, and more!

Benefits of Editable Spelling Worksheets

Wondering why these have been so revolutionary in my room? Well, let me tell you, my friend, there are many benefits! Here are some of the things I have noticed since I started using editable spelling worksheets.

1. Simplified Planning

This is probably my favorite benefit. It can get really overwhelming to have to “start from scratch” when planning engaging spelling lessons each week. If you haven’t found your go-to method yet, you’re probably spending a lot of time looking for activities, testing them out, and then returning to square one if they don’t work out. This has definitely been the case for me over the years, but I think I have finally cracked the code!

This photo shows sight word activities that can be used in centers to differentiate sight word practice.

Now that I use the editable spelling worksheets, all I need to do is sit down ONCE per month and quickly prepare these activities. I don’t need to give away precious brain power to plan new activities since I already know my kids love these. I just set aside some time to enter our spelling words and print the activities I want to use that month. Since each packet connects to the month with seasonal themes, I can be confident that they will connect with the other seasonal activities we do.

Pro Tip: As hard as we plan, there will inevitably be times when we need a backup activity. Whether you find yourself with a few extra minutes or having to adjust due to a schedule change, these editable activities can help you do that. I like to choose a couple of worksheets that I create to be a review of previously learned words. I keep them on hand so that I can pull them out any time I need to. They are great for last-minute sub plans too!

Time-Saving

Did I mention how much time I save using these editable spelling worksheets? Not only do these save me time on the planning side, but they are SO fast to prepare! All I have to do is open the file in Adobe Reader, enter our spelling words, and hit print! I love how quickly and easily I can have these spelling worksheets ready to use for my students.

Pro Tip: To save even more time, keep a document on your computer with your weekly spelling words. Just copy and paste them in instead of typing.

Easy to Differentiate

Differentiation is yet another reason I love editable spelling worksheets. The editable features allow me to easily differentiate spelling activities for my students without it being a time consuming event. Whether you change your spelling words for each small group or on an individual basis, it is so easy with these editable activities. This is so great because it means I can make sure everyone is continually challenged and never bored or working at a level that is too high.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have a set spelling curriculum and create your lists based on the phonics skills you are working on, having a word list for each phonics skill or spelling pattern will save you tons of time!

Multiple Uses

I’m a big fan of resources that can be used in multiple ways. What I mean by this is that I am always looking for lessons and activities that can be repurposed without feeling stale. Many of the editable spelling worksheets we use are great for multiple uses since the words can be swapped out for sight words, vocabulary words, or phonics skills. And the color by code pages. . . those are easy to use with math too!

For example, at the beginning of the month, I might use a color by code page as an introduction for some new spelling words. Then I can use them again as a Fun Friday activity, but this time I can focus on vocabulary words or math facts. The editable features allow me to reuse activities that my students enjoy and make them feel new again.

Engaging

Last, but definitely not least, these editable spelling activities were designed with K-2 learners in mind! Each one is fun, engaging, and effective in helping students learn their target words. Since there are so many activities to choose from, we don’t get stuck in a rut doing the same spelling activities week after week. This helps to keep all the activities feeling fresh and fun!

My students love the seasonal themes and look forward to seeing what’s waiting for them each month! That’s a win in my book!

Pro Tip: To help make these activities even more engaging, I play some fun seasonal music, use an ambiance background, or provide my students with cool school supplies to complete them. You’d be amazed what some holiday music and glitter crayons can do for engagement!
