Festive Fall Math Games for First Grade

As a primary teacher, I am always on the hunt for ways to make our lessons more engaging. This is especially so when it comes to repetitive topics like math skills. If I’m not careful, my kiddos can zone out pretty quickly! If you’re in the same boat, I know you’ll love what I’m sharing today! Let’s chat about how fall math games can make math skills practice engaging and fun in the primary classroom.

Digital Learning for the Win

So, wondering what these fall math games consist of? In my room, I’m a big fan of digital learning, so I created a bunch of different Boom Card decks to use with my students. Never heard of Boom Cards? These digital task cards are a real classroom hero! They offer a game-like format that students love, can be used for just about any topic, and are even self-checking! This is one of my favorite features since it means students can see if they answered correctly before moving on. This is SO important for learning! After all, practice is no good if the student has been doing the activity wrong the whole time, right?

Another benefit of these digital, fall math games is that they are super versatile in how they can be used. They’re great for whole-group teaching using a smart board, perfect for small-group modeling, fun for centers, and even great for independent practice. Not to mention, the kids love them! That’s really why they’ll become a classroom favorite!

My Favorite Fall Math Games

So, are you wondering what types of math skills you can expect inside my fall math games? Let’s take a closer look at the activities we use and what students will be learning!

Pattern Block Fall Math Games

Do you use pattern blocks in your room? Us too! These are a popular activity among my students, so why not make them digital to extend the fun?! That’s exactly what I did with this first set of fall math games. In this deck of Boom Cards, students will use digital pattern blocks to build fall shapes. Students will drag and drop the pieces to build the shape and then answer math questions for each one.

These engaging games are fun for students and allow them to be fully independent since they all include audio directions. Typically I will model how to use these fall math games up on the smartboard first in a whole group setting. I show the students how to drag and drop and how to select their answers to the questions when they are finished. Then, they can work with a partner to take turns completing the activities on their own. The cards can be used on iPads, tablets, computers, and other digital devices, making them super simple to weave into our routine.

Number Bonds to 10

Next up, let’s talk about a fun way to practice number bonds! These Fall Number Bonds Boom Cards will help expand your students’ fact fluency skills by dragging and dropping the correct number to complete the bond. The deck includes numbers up to ten, making it perfect for students in kindergarten and first grade. Not to mention, the fun fall theme on each card will be a hit too!

This deck also includes audio directions, making it perfect for young students who are not yet reading. They can simply click the speaker, listen to the directions, and then complete the task. I love using this deck during transitions in my room since each card is quick and easy to complete. Students will come up to the board when called, complete a task, and then they line up or choose a center to use. These fall math games make it really easy to weave a little extra math practice into the nooks and crannies of our day!

Addition and Subtraction Fall Math Games

My littles always need practice with addition and subtraction, which is why I am such a fan of these options. Both my Addition Fall Math Games and my Subtraction Fall Math Games make practicing these skills simple and easy. These cards are laid out the same way, asking students to complete an equation within 10. Each card also includes a number line for reference. I find that this is helpful for students, especially in the fall when we are just getting started with these skills.

To use, students will read the equation, use the number line to solve if needed, and then drag the correct answer to complete it. The addition cards have students drag apples into an apple basket. The subtraction version features a sunflower that students must “build” by dragging and dropping the correct answer. These cards are self-checking, so if a student answers incorrectly, they will be notified and prompted to try again. This is so important as students are working hard to master those math facts!

Counting On

Counting on is another math skill we’re targeting with our fall math games. This is one of my students’ favorite activities in the bunch. To use these cards, students will read the number on the sign and count on from there. Each card shows a pumpkin patch with pumpkins to count, so they know how many to add. Then, they select their answer on the right by clicking the correct number.

This activity is also self-checking and includes audio directions making it a perfect choice for center time. I will often pair students up to work on this activity. They take turns answering the questions and observing their partner count on. There are 20 cards included in this deck, so it’s the perfect activity to use with a partner. I love allowing the students an opportunity to watch each other and learn from each other during center time.

Skip Counting Fall Games

Last on my list of fall math games is Skip Counting Cards! In this deck, students will practice skip counting by 5’s and 10’s. This can be a tricky one for students to master, so I love using these fall-themed games to practice! Inside this deck, you’ll find two different card options. In the first activity, students will drag the numbers to the buckets to skip count by 5’s and 10’s. In the second option, students will count sets of apples by 5’s and 10’s and click on the apple with the number that tells how many. Having multiple options keeps this topic fun for students and maintains engagement.

This particular deck is one that we will often practice with as a whole class over and over. It’s fun to skip count as a class and I find that this teaching format helps this concept stick with my students! I simply pop a card up on the SmartBoard and we all count together to solve the card. Once we have done this a few times, they’re great for assigning as a continued practice activity during center time.
