What’s all the BUZZ about Boom Cards?

I’m sure you’ve heard about Boom Cards. They are being talked about EVERYWHERE. I see them popping up all over my Instagram feed, Teachers Pay Teachers pages, and my Pinterest is bursting with pins to these interactive, digital task cards. So what’s all the buzz about them?

Boom Cards have been around for a while. I am not sure exactly how long but I started creating and using them with my students in September of 2018. I first used them as whole class review activities that were displayed on the Smart Board. I soon realized that they are pretty AMAZING and there are endless ways to use them with my students. I started using them during my literacy and math centers, early finisher activities, and small group or 1:1 interventions.

When the school closures due to COVID-19 happened, I started using Boom Cards as my assignments. This is when all the Boom Card buzz really started happening as more and more teachers and parents finally understood how great they were. Because they are digital and have a component for teachers to monitor student progress from afar, they became a distance learning game-changer. Don’t just take it from me… here’s what some teachers have to say about Boom Cards!

“My students LOVED these Boom cards! They are adorable and were perfect for distance learning. Thank you for creating such a fun activity for my class!” -K

“I used this Boom deck during e-learning and not only did my students love it but their parents also gave positive feedback while I was able to monitor progress.” -A

With in-person learning making a comeback during the 2020-2021 school year, one thing that came back to the classroom was Boom Cards. Teachers fell in love with them during distance learning and quickly realized that they aren’t just a tool for virtual but a great component to in-person learning too!

What are Boom Cards?

Basically, they are the task cards that you love to use but without the paper and prepping because they are digital. They are a “gamified” learning activity that is played on the Boom Learning website (www.boomlearning.com) or their free APP. Boom Cards are highly engaging, interactive, and provide students with immediate feedback. They can be played on almost any device with an internet connection, making them perfect for classroom use or distance learning. All you need is a free account to get started, however, if you want to track data on your whole class, you will need a paid subscription. You can click here to find out about the different memberships and get help deciding which subscription is right for you.

The best part about Boom Cards? You can find “decks” for pretty much any subject, skill, and grade level!

The drag and drop feature makes Boom Cards engaging and interactive for young learners! In this word building deck, students are listening to the word and dragging the letters to correctly spell the CVC Word. Click HERE to learn more about this deck.

Can you tell why there is so much BUZZ around Boom Cards? Since I’ve been using and creating them since 2018, I have a ton of decks in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store. Below I will share a few decks that I use in my First Grade classroom.

I use these decks when I teach Magic E to my students. This bundle includes a deck for each vowel as well a mixed vowel deck and each card includes sound! No more, “what is this a picture of” questions during your literacy centers.
These decks are PERFECT for practicing Sight Words! Students will read, trace, and build the sight word. They can also click the speaker to have the sight word read to them for extra reinforcement.
My students can always use extra practice with Story Problems. This deck includes audio which allows students can have the word problem read aloud to them before they solve it!
