4 Earth Day Classroom Activities That Are Fun, Flexible, and Easy to Prep
Earth Day is one of those celebrations that feels important, but often lands in the middle of an already packed spring schedule. You know how it goes. . . End of year testing prep is starting, field trips are popping up, and students are full of energy. Somewhere in the middle of it all, Earth Day appears on the calendar. Most teachers want to make it meaningful, but they don’t want to spend hours planning something elaborate.

The good news is that Earth Day in a K-2 classroom doesn’t need to be complicated to be impactful. With a simple structure and some engaging, low-prep activities, you can build understanding in a way that feels intentional and manageable! Here’s how to do it!
Why Celebrate Earth Day in K-2?
First, let’s pause for just a moment and chat about why you might want to include Earth Day activities in your lesson plan. Primary students are naturally curious about the world around them. They care about animals, nature, and fairness. Earth Day provides a built-in opportunity to connect your natural curiosity with responsibility and real-world action.
When lessons are concrete and age-appropriate, students begin to understand ideas like pollution, recycling, and protecting shared spaces in ways that feel empowering. With simple explanations and a chance to participate, Earth Day becomes a relatable and fun topic to explore.
Not to mention, when students see that even small actions matter, we can make a big impact! Now, onto those activities I mentioned!
1. Digital Lesson Slides for Introducing Earth Day
First up, let’s talk about my favorite way to introduce Earth Day to students. . . Digital Lesson Slides! These are great because they require no prep and offer a simple way to introduce what Earth Day is, why it matters, and how students can help protect our planet.

In my classroom, I use this Earth Day Digital Lesson Pack that includes 23 interactive slides in a Google Slides Presentation format. Here’s a peek at the lesson topics inside:
- Introduction to Earth Day
- What is Pollution?
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Sorting Activity
- Earth Day Pledge
- Discussion & Wrap-Up
Each of the slides focuses on kid-friendly explanations, simple definitions, and thought-provoking discussion prompts. These slides make it easy to lead a discussion and introduce new terms to your students. In addition to the lessons themselves, there are interactive features, too! Students are able to drag and drop, sort, and actively participate as you teach. I’ve also included an in-depth teacher guide and suggested lesson plan to help you map out how to use this in your room.
How to Use This Lesson
To use this activity as a whole-group lesson, simply project the no-prep slides on an interactive whiteboard. Read the slides aloud and pause to ask questions and guide discussion with the included prompts. Then, you can have students respond verbally, or call on students to come up to the board and use some of the interactive features.
This resource also works well on individual devices, such as in a Google Classroom assignment. For this option, you can add text boxes to the slides so they can respond to the discussion questions, use the drag-and-drop features, and circle answers. This can be a wonderful follow-up station after your whole group lesson to help the material sink in and incorporate some technology use in the process!
2. Printable Earth Day Activity Pack
Once you’ve completed a whole group lesson to introduce Earth Day topics, consider taking a deeper dive to apply what you’ve learned. The Earth Day Printable Activities Pack is a great option for this! Inside, you get a wide variety of activities for hands-on learning that won’t take hours to prep! Let’s take a peek at the 12, ready-to-print activities included:

- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Sorting Activity
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Drawing Activity
- Would You Rather? Earth Day Edition
- Color by Code Worksheets
- Earth Day Poetry
- Earth Day Challenge Bingo
- Our Earth, Our Promise Class Book
- Mini Flipbook
- Earth Day Word Searches
- Earth Day Craft
- Earth Day Bookmarks
- Earth Hero Crowns
- Earth Explorer’s Certificate
How to Use These Activities
My favorite way to use these activities is during center time. I like to assign different activities to each station in the classroom and let the kids work through them independently, while I work with a small group. They are all designed with a kid-friendly, easy-to-use format, so you can count on K-2 students being able to understand what to do!
For example, you might have one table working on color-by-code worksheets, another working on word searches, and another completing the cut-and-paste sorting activity. Then, you can guide a writing lesson using the “Would You Rather?” prompts or the Earth Day Poetry pages at your table.
After centers, you can come together as a group to color crowns, decorate bookmarks, and play a round of BINGO. These activities are flexible, easy to use, and fit well into a typical primary classroom schedule. The best part is that you can pick and choose what to include and how to use them!
3. More Digital Slides Earth Day Activities
I know we already talked about the digital lessons in section one, but I also have a Digital Google Slides Activity Pack that includes 3 different games with movable pieces and interactive features. This resource focuses specifically on encouraging students to think critically about how they can help the Earth.
How to Use These Activities

In this resource, you get 21 different slides. You can open them on the interactive whiteboard or assign them individually to each student so they can work on them independently using a tablet or Chromebook.
Once you have assigned the activities, students will drag and drop, sort, and type their responses on the slides. The movable pieces and typing tasks keep students engaged in learning, while completely eliminating prep for you. You’ll love the versatility and easy-to-use nature of this Google Slides Activity Pack!
4. Earth Day Boom Cards
Last, but certainly not least, I’ve got Earth Day Boom Cards your students will LOVE! These digital task cards are interactive, self-checking, and focus on recycling. These cards are a great way to apply what you’ve learned from the Digital Lesson Slides and the Printable Activities Pack.
How to Use These in Your Classroom

In my classroom, I love using these as one of our center activities. Kids can play with a partner or play individually to practice sorting items into the correct category. And since the cards include audio instructions and provide immediate feedback, they can use them on their own with ease!
To set this up, open the digital deck on any device. Once the students arrive at the center, they can work through the deck by clicking the speaker for instructions. They will sort items into different bins for trash, recycling, or compost. This process continues until they have worked through the whole digital deck.
These Earth Day Boom Cards are great for whole group, small group, independent centers, fast finishers, as well as distance and remote learning.
How It All Fits Together
If you’re wondering how to structure Earth Day without overcomplicating it, these activities make it simple and easy! I like to use these throughout a week, for some focused Earth Day fun in the classroom. Here’s how that can look:

Start with the interactive Google Slides lesson to introduce core concepts and kick off your lessons. This will help open up the discussion about Earth Day and get students thinking. Then, as you move through the week, incorporate printable and digital activities to practice those ideas during centers and small groups. At the end of the week, revisit the digital slides and review what you’ve learned. In the printable activities set, you will find crowns and certificates that help you celebrate and reflect on what’s been covered.
When you use all of these resources together, your Earth Day Lessons will feel cohesive and easy to implement, instead of leaving you piecing random lessons and worksheets together.
