11 First Grade Math Crafts to Use All Year Long
If you teach first grade, you know how much your students love hands-on learning. That’s why math crafts are such a game-changer! Not only do they give kids a chance to cut, glue, and create, but they also help reinforce important math skills in a fun and memorable way. Come along to see how you can weave these into your routine all year long.

The Power of Math Crafts for Primary Learning
Crafts in the math block aren’t just “extra” or “fluff.” They serve a powerful purpose by making abstract concepts concrete and giving students something they can see, touch, and manipulate. When a child is cutting, gluing, and assembling pieces, they’re also reinforcing the math skill behind the craft in a hands-on way that builds understanding. These activities encourage creativity, integrate fine motor practice, and provide meaningful opportunities for students to explain their thinking.
Best of all, students end up with a finished product they’re proud to display! Whether on a bulletin board, in a math notebook, or at home, showing off their work builds confidence and helps them see themselves as successful mathematicians. No matter how you slice it, math crafts are pretty magical for first-grade learning!
The Benefits of Math Crafts
Let’s take a quick look at what you can look forward to when you start using math crafts in your first-grade classroom:

- Hands-on engagement: Students stay focused when they get to create and manipulate pieces while solving problems.
- Built-in creativity: Crafts give students the freedom to express themselves while practicing grade-level standards.
- Stronger retention: Linking math practice to a seasonal or themed activity helps students remember what they learned.
- Fine motor development: We all know firsties need practice with scissors and glue! This is a great opportunity to do so!
- Instant displays: Seasonal math crafts double as eye-catching displays to celebrate your students’ hard work. Plus, you won’t even have to plan what to put on your bulletin board each month!
Once I saw these benefits come to life in my own classroom, I knew I had to share them with you all! To make planning even easier, I’ve created a Monthly Math Craft Overview Sheet that maps out the 11 math crafts I use for the whole year. This is a great way to see exactly what math skills and themes students will be focused on each month.
Crafts by Month
Want a closer look at how to use math crafts all year long? Let’s take a peek at each month and the skill each targets!
August: Crayon Box – Addition & Subtraction to 10
Back-to-school is the perfect time to review basic facts to 10. The Crayon Box Craft lets students solve equations, then “fill” their box with crayons. This helps solidify addition and subtraction fluency while building confidence from the very first month.
September: Apple Baskets – Addition & Subtraction to 10 or 20

As fall rolls in, students extend their fact practice to 20. In this activity, students solve equations and write the answer on the apple baskets, reinforcing fluency and number sense. Plus, the finished crafts make an adorable fall bulletin board.
October: Ghosts – Fact Families
Understanding fact families helps students see the relationship between addition and subtraction. With this ghost craft, students will write the fact family for 3 numbers as they assemble spooky little characters. It’s a fun way to practice a sometimes-tricky concept.
November: Turkeys – True or False Equations
By November, students are ready to tackle the idea of true/false math sentences. In this turkey craft, they decide which equations make sense and which don’t on their turkey feathers. This is a perfect seasonal way to deepen reasoning skills.
December: Snowmen – Adding 3 Numbers

Adding three numbers can feel intimidating at first. This snowman craft helps students break down problems into manageable steps. Each snowball features equations to solve, and students will glue the sum on each one to complete the task.
January: Penguins – Word Problems
Word problems challenge students to apply what they know. In this penguin craft, students solve winter-themed problems or write one of their own. After they complete the problem, they assemble the cute penguin craft, which looks adorable displayed on a bulletin board! Want to see this activity in action? February: Love Bugs – Place Value
Place value is one of the most important concepts in first grade. With this love bug craft, students practice identifying tens and ones, and building with base ten blocks while creating colorful bugs. This activity builds a strong foundation for more advanced addition and subtraction later in the year. March: Rainbows & Clovers – Comparing Numbers

As spring approaches, students work on comparing numbers using <, >, and =. This craft uses rainbows and clovers to help them practice comparing pairs of numbers while creating a bright, cheerful display.
April: Flowers – Telling Time
Telling time can be tricky. With this flower craft, students get practice with both digital and analog clocks. Students practice reading and setting clocks while building a seasonal spring project.
May: Butterflies – 2-Digit Addition
In May, students are ready for larger numbers. This butterfly craft has students solve 2-digit addition problems and use the answers to design their butterfly. It includes options with and without regrouping, so you can tailor this to your students’ skill levels!
June: Summer – Fractions

Fractions are a big milestone for the end of first grade. This summer-themed craft introduces halves, fourths, and equal parts with fun visuals like ice cream or beach balls. Students will sort fractions into the correct category as they build. It’s a perfect way to keep things light and engaging as the year wraps up. Want more details and extension ideas?
